Weekend DIY Fix – How to paint weatherboards
In this Weekend DIY Fix video, Nelson-based builder Chris Donnelly (Ngāti Maniapoto) shows how to prep and paint weatherboards. Chris heads down to his local Resene ColorShop to get expert advice from Resene paint expert Adrian. Here are Adrian’s top tips: • Give the weatherboards a thorough sand using 150-180 grit sandpaper. This will allow the next coat of paint to get a good grip on the weatherboard surface. Wipe away all sanding dust after sanding. • Prime the area with Resene Quick Dry waterborne primer undercoat (exterior/interior). This will help give maximum adhesion to ensure the new paint layer bonds to the weatherboard. Step 1 Start by sanding the weatherboards to remove any loose paint or imperfections. Chris uses 180 grit sandpaper. Wipe off all sanding dust. Step 2 Fill in any holes or cracks with Resene EzyFill Quick, and allow to dry beforelightlyy sanding. Wipe off all sanding dust. Step 3 Prime the entire area with Resene Quick Dry waterborne primer undercoat (exterior/interior) and allow to dry completely. Step 4 Now it is time to paint the weatherboards. Make sure to use a flat brush and work horizontally across the entire length of the weatherboards. Allow the first layer of paint to dry before applying a second coat. Now you know how to paint weatherboards! Best of luck. MasterStroke by Resene is here to help you master your paint and decorating DIY projects.
